Job Description
Job Functions/Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with Recycling Supervisor to identify process improvements, develop SOPs, and communicate changes to staff improve processes and procedures surrounding zero waste on campus
- Create content and conduct training to aid in the on-boarding of student workers, part time employees, and AmeriCorps members
- Assist Recycling Supervisor as backup in the training and supervision of team members and volunteers on safe equipment operation, safety standards, and maintenance procedures, providing work direction and safety guidance.
- Create and distribute educational materials at sporting events, such as brochures, fliers, and online content; to promote zero waste practices at UT
- Develop, nurture, and maintain partnerships with community organizations like Keep Knoxville Beautiful and Westrock to advance Knoxville's zero waste initiatives
- Assist Recycling Supervisor with all phases of projects, such as overseeing reception of sustainable materials, ensuring effective waste diversion strategies, delivering educational content when appropriate, and coordination of relevant personnel/equipment
- Follow up with stakeholders and campus personnel to support the execution of work, ensuring deliverables are completed on schedule and desired outcomes are achieved
- Collaborate with campus organizations to promote joint zero waste efforts and enhance engagement on campus and abroad
- Help orchestrate the success of 'Zero-Waste Game Days' as a driver or zone leader. This involves pregame set up, game day or post-game operations, leading volunteers, AmeriCorps members, student workers, and planning logistics and efficiency
- Coordinate waste collection and relevant personnel in occasional weekend and evening events such as move-in, move-out, and zero-waste picnics
- Assist Recycling Supervisor as backup with quality control, organization, sorting, intake, and disposal of recyclable materials such as Universal Waste, electronic waste, scrap metal, textiles, pallets, plastic film, and scrap wood
- Operate a variety of truck features to collect, compact, and maneuver waste such as hydraulic truck controls, hydraulic cable cinches, liftgates, and cart tippers
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of recycling, Universal Waste, composting, and sustainability and related Federal, State, and local laws
- Must have effective oral and written communication, time management, problem-solving, and customer service skills
- Must have computer and smartphone skills in order to use email and order parts through Archibus
- Ability to perform moderately strenuous work activities, including continuously lifting for multiple hours
- Ability to work independently for up to 8 hours
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with community members, businesses, government agencies, and other stakeholders
- Ability to work with diverse audiences
- Ability to conduct effective outreach to raise awareness of zero waste practices
