What You Will Do


Are you a talented and driven engineer looking to develop, maintain, and apply a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions? Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join our Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Natural Gas Mechanical Engineer. In this challenging and rewarding role you will be responsible for system engineering to support operations, construction, preventative and corrective maintenance, and regulatory compliance for LANL's natural gas distribution assets. LANL Utilities & Infrastructure (UI) owns and operates approximately 60 miles of natural gas pipelines, 600 regulator stations and 500 valves throughout the LANL campus. In this role, you will provide subject matter expertise on the natural gas distribution system from point of delivery to 300 end users to ensure safety, quality, and reliability of LANL's natural gas assets. You will also participate in transportation service procurement, metering, and billing verification. Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 2 or Engineer 3 level depending on experience and skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.


This position includes (but is not limited to) the following job duties:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert and primary technical point of contact for all aspects of assigned systems
  • Perform annual condition assessment of all natural gas system assets and make recommendations for maintenance and improvement projects
  • Support operations and maintenance programs with engineering expertise that meet applicable codes and standards
  • Participate in engineering observation of natural gas infrastructure construction and maintenance activities
  • Lead the technical aspects of cathodic protection, leak inspections, and determine corrective actions
  • Serve as a pressure safety representative for the affected systems per LANL and industry standards
  • Perform system modeling to evaluate new service requests and identify constraints within the system
  • Provide input to natural gas transportation contracting by determining annual usage quantities, monthly supply nominations, and seasonal hedging recommendations. Review monthly supply and transportation invoices for accuracy
  • Prepare and submit documents, studies, calculations, and reports for natural gas systems as required by regulatory agencies
  • Create and review drawings and specifications for projects including new service connections, facility upgrades, and disconnects
  • Apply industry recognized codes and standards and applicable LANL engineering standards to natural gas system project designs for distribution and service lines, regulator stations, valves, and meters
  • Review and approve vendor submittals and design modifications as required for project completion and other duties as assigned
  • Create inspection criteria and perform field observations to verify construction and maintenance work
  • Establish and maintain technical baseline as-built documentation to ensure safe and reliable operations, maintenance, and construction

What You Need



Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience working in an engineering, operations, or maintenance role in natural gas or similar transmission or distribution pipeline systems
  • Working knowledge of pressure safety systems including valves, regulators, metering and relief devices
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards for natural gas systems (FERC, NFPA 54, DOT/PHMSA, ASME B31.8, ASME 11-04, 49 CFR 190-199, etc)
  • Experience in hydraulic modeling, drafting, and mapping software (GASCalc, GASWorkS, B3PE/Bradley Bean, AutoCAD, GIS, etc)
  • Experience providing long-term operational and strategic planning for utility reinvestment and asset management
  • Experience developing and managing complex projects
  • Experience developing and managing project schedules and resources allocation
Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200) Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.



Engineer 3 ($112,000 - $186,700) Education/Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university and a minimum of 6 years practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.



Desired Qualifications:

  • EIT or Professional Engineering certification
  • Working knowledge of Class 4 natural gas distribution systems and Master Meter requirements
  • Training or certifications in cathodic protection and leak inspection (NACE, CP1, CP2, or CP3, etc)
  • Experience preparing reports for compliance audits
  • Experience with evaluating, designing, installing, operating and troubleshooting of metering devices
  • Knowledge of DOE standards applicable to design implementation
  • Familiarity with LANL engineering processes and procedures

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.



Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.



  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
