DESCRIPTION

Otterbein University is seeking a Museum and Gallery Assistant. Under the guidance of the Museum & Galleries Director, the Assistant will attend to the details of an ambitious, creative, and academically positioned exhibition schedule in the University's four professional venues: The Frank Museum of Art and the Miller, Fisher, and Stichweh Galleries, and occasional installations in the Dunlap Gallery, Battelle Fine Arts Center. Broadly described, those details include installation, programming, reception preparation, publicity, and community outreach. The Assistant also serves as the Registrar for the Art Collections Loan Program, works with the Director to manage Otterbein's permanent art collection, supervises student workers in The Frank Museum, and supports hands-on training of student Interns. This is a part-time, non-exempt position working part-time, 25 per hours per week, 12 months per year.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the guidance of and in collaboration with the Museum & Galleries Director:

  • Serve as the on-site staff representative at the Museum, overseeing interactions with the public and upkeep of the public and spaces.
  • Install exhibitions as designed by and in coordination with the Director, guest curators, and visiting artists, including hanging signage and labels.
  • Work collaboratively with contracted installers and art handlers when needed
  • Serve as point person for the Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition
  • Help to coordinate exhibition receptions
  • Promote exhibitions through photography, video, and on social media platforms
  • Maintain and update mailing lists, coordinate annual mailings, and track visitor data
  • Assist with exhibition-related programming
  • Assist in managing the permanent art collection, including physical organization, photography, database maintenance and updates, and object inspections
  • Coordinate art loans on campus through the Art Collections Loan Program
  • Assist in the hiring, scheduling, training and oversight of student workers
  • Supervise student workers in the Museum and help to train student Museum Interns as part of the growing credit-bearing Internship program
  • Attend to building captain duties at The Frank Museum of Art
  • Notify the Director of facility any collection concerns
  • Maintain supplies for all gallery and museum activities including framing and installation
  • Provide collection and visitor-related data for grant writing
  • Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises museum work study students; oversee aspects of student museum internships



QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: MFA or equivalent experience in a relevant discipline, with experience in art exhibition duties such as art handling and preparation, exhibition space preparation and installation, creative problem-solving, and programming organization.



LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written English skills including grammar.



MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be competent in general math.



TECHNICAL SKILLS: Ability to bring creative fine arts training into an installation context. Willingness to learn about and to maintain Museum-quality standards for exhibitions and collections management. Knowledge and use of art installation materials and tools required. Knowledge of proper art handling techniques preferred (willing to train). Knowledge of collections management processes and procedures preferred (willing to train), Knowledge of and strategic use of social media platforms, Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator preferred. Knowledge of general office procedures and ability to use office equipment, including computer, copier, and telephone. Strong interpersonal and supervisory skills, with an interest in working with students. Must take pride in and be thorough in quality of work produced.

Must be able to work collaboratively and to interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies. Ability to think creatively and to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Must be able to work independently and must retain confidential information.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear, sit, reach and use repetitive motions of hands and wrists. The employee is required to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and reach as is consistent with exhibition installation. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds and must be comfortable working with ladders. This position requires close vision. Must be able to meet regular and predictable attendance standards.
