Job Description

Job Summary :  In collaboration with organizing team, the Civic Engagement Organizer will be responsible for building relationships with community members and other organizations to develop and advance an agenda to expand housing affordability and tenants rights. The ideal candidate will have strong bilingual communication skills, experience in consensus and community building, and a commitment to social justice.

Status: Full-time, Nonexempt, Temporary
Location:  Chinatown neighborhood, San Francisco
Hours: Work from home eligible,  Now till December 24, 2024, Monday through Friday, 9:00a.m. to 5:30p.m., and some weekends and evenings; flexible work hours needed
Salary:  $33.10 - $34.84 per hour; Comprehensive benefits

The Organization A private non-profit founded in 1977, Chinatown Community Development Center believes in a comprehensive vision of community. We own and/or manage approximately 38 affordable housing buildings serving over 5,000 low-income seniors, single adults, formerly homeless adults, and families of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Tenderloin, Western Addition, and Polk Gulch neighborhoods. Job Responsibilities
  • Engage with community members to understand their needs, interests, and concerns regarding housing and related needs and provide them with a better understanding of their rights and opportunities to improve their present conditions and to access other housing opportunities.
  • Organize and coordinate civic engagement events such as town hall meetings, and community forums, conduct community surveys.
  • Build the community network by recruiting, training, and managing volunteers to support various community engagement initiatives and events.
  • Assist and work with the working groups to develop the public education and outreach plan to achieve the goals and outcomes of the campaigns.
  • Design and create outreach materials including translation of relevant materials.
  • Conduct educational workshops and distribute outreach materials (including translation of relevant materials) to tenant groups, community members and allies on local and state initiatives.
  • Coordinate and participate in community events, public meetings, and media appearances to raise awareness about civic engagement opportunities and initiatives.
  • Utilize multiple communication channels to disseminate event information to community members, including social media, flyers, emails, etc.
  • Participate in check-ins, team meetings and coalition meetings to communicate effectively to build the working relationships and alliances that can support the cause.
  • Actively participate in citywide efforts to promote community-supported initiatives through community engagement.
  • Provide support to the implementation of the media outreach plan to expand the public awareness of the initiatives.
  • Track and keep records of the progress of media records including broadcast (TV and radio), digital, social, and print media.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with tenant groups and community agencies and work collaboratively to maximize civic engagement and voter turnout.  
  • Promote civic engagement dialogues in the low-income community and assist in achieving objectives for civic engagement efforts.

What You Will Do
  • Regularly meet with grassroots leaders and support their campaigns and initiatives to advance housing justice.
  • Outreach in English and Cantonese to inform community members about housing rights and initiatives to expand housing opportunity.
  • Organize meetings with community members and allies on developing common agendas to address community needs.
  • Participate in public events, media presentations, and public hearings.
  • Support other team members in related initiatives and projects to protect and advance tenant rights.
What You Bring
  • Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills, with the ability to conduct workshops and meetings in English and Cantonese
  • Familiarity with and sensitivity to low-income immigrant neighborhoods and issues relevant to the community
  • Biliterate in Chinese and ability to speak fluently in Cantonese
  • Creative and comprehensive problem-solving skills
  • Ability to be flexible and perform variety of activities
  • Good listening skills and ability to exercise patience
  • Ability to work independently as well as in team structure
  • Commitment to comprehensive vision of community development and improving the life for low-income people
  • Capacity to work evening and weekends
Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in social service, sociology, psychology, or related field
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Chinese and English
  • Basic word processing, Excel spreadsheet

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or familiarity with the Chinatown neighborhood
  • Familiarity with Chinese software program
  • Two (2) years experience in non-profit agency serving low-income clients
