Job Description

Carnegie Mellon University's College of Fine Arts (CFA)- School of Design is searching for a Business Manager to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by providing support by managing the operations of the School of Design, primarily in the areas of finance and related strategies. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: financial planning and control, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, reporting, transactional level accounting, procurement, payroll and HR functions. The Business Manager typically has budgetary responsibility of between $5-20M.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a resource and advisor to the head of school, faculty and staff on matters of compliance, policy, administration and planning
  • Being responsible for implementation of university programs by coordinating efforts with internal and external stakeholders and manage assigned operational areas within the unit.
  • Handle all aspects of Workday (CMU's HRIS System): Reviewing and approving HR transactions and specific administrative needs of the members of the School of Design, spanning staff, graduate students, and faculty. Ensure that faculty, staff, and students are paid accurately and on time.
  • Liaise with CFA Finance Team.
  • Coordinate all department hiring to ensure that faculty and staff are hired according to University and Federal guidelines. Duties include engagement with faculty committees to support application review and job talks, as well as defining structured interviews for all staff hiring.
  • Own all financial responsibilities for the Department, including keeping meticulous records for all transactions associated with the annual budget.
  • Maintain the established procedures using Excel4Apps, Oracle, Tableau, Google Sheets, and Google Data Studio to continue providing weekly financial reporting and analysis.
  • Engage in financial planning and analysis (FP&A) in partnership with CFA's Dean's Office in preparation for university financial reviews.
  • Implement all endowed and expendable gift agreement conditions, working closely with the University's Advancement team to provide stewardship updates throughout the year.
  • Ensure usage of funds align with the college/school Strategic Plan.

This critical team member must possess sound financial competence combined with an entrepreneurial and collaborative approach, as they will be integral to the creation of innovative self-sustaining financial models to support the School of Design's new initiatives. The ability to "tell a story or sketch with numbers" will be a critical component of this role in support of these initiatives. Additionally, the successful incumbent will possess the ability to build new and customized reports to support the Head of School and members of the leadership team in decision making.

You should demonstrate:

  • Excellent project management and oral/written communication skills
  • Management and Human Resources experience preferred

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or Business/Business Administration required. Master's degree preferred
  • 5-8 years experience in accounting, finance or business administration required, preferably in higher education
  • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification desirable

  • Work Posture: This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on-campus/in office presence 3 days a week.
  • This is a full - time (37.5 hours), exempt position.
